Fifty Fifty Music Demo Evaluation

Demo/Album Title: Name Witheld

Songwriting: Good
Comments: The songs have a musical sophistication, although for the most part there are no memorable "hooks" of a"pop" song. Lyrically, the songs are competent but don't break any new ground. You do a good job with the subjects you have chosen, but these are the well-worn topics of hundreds of songs.
Performance: Very Good
Comments: Your voice is good - the performance as well. However, you don't have the low overtones of the best R & B singers. I would say you are a sensual chanteuse. The musicianship on the album is excellent - and the use of textures and timbres not usually found in Western music very refreshing
Production: (this refers mostly to song arrangements and is separate from sound quality/audio fidelity) Excellent
Comments: I feel that your producer did an excellent job with these tracks. I like the fusion of hip hop production, elements of World Music, a mixture of percussion samples, etc. The mix is excellent as well - you can hear everything clearly. Everything has it's place. Vocals are enhanced by the production but not overtaken by it.
Audio Quality: Excellent
Comments: The sound quality of the recording is high. Your producer is an an excellent mixer, as outlined above. The recording is truly hi-fi - a welcome submission since many of the demos we receive are poorly done
Packaging: (if applicable) Very Good
Comments: I like the CD cover - it's sensual without being sexual. It draws you in instead of pushing you away.
Overall Evaluation: Good to Very Good
My biggest problem here is that the songs don't stick in my mind. I enjoy listening to them but could not sing them back to you, even after listening through the CD three times. I realize that much of the music you find today on adult contemporary radio has the same problem. Yet, I am a sucker for a "pop" hook and feel that a song should have immediately recognizable sections and should grab your attention, rather than simply wash over you.
Advice on how to proceed with your career
Both the asset and the liability of this recording is that it is so eclectic - taking elements of so many musical genres. I would imagine that the rap/urban community would find this a bit tame. The R/B community would find the ethnic percussion out-of-character and I imagine you might be a victim of reverse racism as well. I would proceed on several fronts.
Get "[song 1]" and "[song 2]" to as many club DJ's as possible in a couple of key cities - say NYC and Philadelphia.
Get this EP to college radio stations that have an R/B specialty show.
Try to play at as many clubs as possible, using a backing track to save money on hiring musicians. You might want to perform with a DJ.
As you start finding out who your friends are at the clubs, you will learn about key DJ's in other cities. Get them the EP. Hopefully, this word of mouth buzz will help you build your career. At each of these shows, sell your EP for cheap - say $4.00 - just to get people into what you are doing.
As far as labels are concerned, I would be surprised if a label would take this kind of project on at this point. You would need to build your following and get some publicity on your own first. Releasing an album in either the R & B or adult contemporary genres is extremely expensive - a label would need to feel pretty sure about it's return investment before committing to you.
